History of the South Jersey Berry Basket
In the early 1900's, these baskets were made for carrying strawberries to market. The berry basket was made quickly and was crudely held together with two brass tacks. After the basket was full, it was placed into a wooden box and was delivered to New York City to be sold. The berry basket was originally woven free-hand by the workers on the farm during the winter months.
